Annual summer academy of the graduate school "Studies on the interaction of free oxygen radical with molecules at electrodes and applications to biochemical and medical systems" has been organized in Greifswald again.

Destructive interactions of free radicals, especially of free oxygen radicals (FOR’s) with bonded molecules and materials are studied to get more insight into the specificity of these interactions. The innovative idea behind this project is to exploit electrochemical approaches to study free radical reactions in detail. A second important new idea is to use these systems for the study of antioxidants. A third novel application will be the detection of FOR‘s in biological material. The final goal will be to develop the means to detect FOR‘s in living systems for in-vivo monitoring.

In the name of our research group Ákos Kriston showed the latest results about "The crucial step in the road towards efficient fuel cells: the reduction of oxygen". In the talk the electrochemical investigation of the oxygen reduction reaction has been presented. The novel results of the dynamics of the oxygen reduction reaction on the surface have been elucidated by mathematical modeling, quartz crystal nanobalance and AFM/STM measurements.

A hallgatók megismerkedhettek a HY-GO™ tüzelőanyag-cellás jármű fejlesztésével is, amelyet főként hallgatók készítenek.

Our research group participated at the 61th Annual ISE Meeting held in Nice between 26 September and 1 October. 8 members of the group took part on the conference with two oral and six poster presentations. The Acropolis in the center of Nizza.was the home for the 16 sections of the conference. Dr. George Inzelt professor delivered an invited lecture about RuO2-polyaniline composites, Balázs Berkes presented the behavior of platinum in acid medium. Both oral presentations took place with a great interest. The six posters were presented at the 15th Conference section of the fuel cells physical modeling and simulation topics. All members of the group participated actively in the preparation of the posters. In the conference Ákos Kriston, Tamás Szabó, Istvan Farago, Peter Simon, Róbert Horváth and Ákos Nemes presented the posters.

The titles of the posters:

  • Ákos Kriston, Balázs B. Berkes, Péter Simon, György Inzelt: Investigation of oxygen reduction reaction on Pt by using electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance and numerical simulation
  • István Faragó, Ferenc Izsák, Ákos Kriston, Tamás Szabó: A three-dimensional model of PEM fuel cells with heterogeneous material parameter distributions
  • Ágnes Havasi, Róbert Horváth, Tamás Szabó, Ákos Nemes: Parameter estimation in a PEMFC model
  • Ákos Nemes, Ákos Kriston, György Inzelt and Tamás Szabó: Analysis of the effects of variation of the MEA microstructure at different Pt/Nafion ratios, pressures and temperatures
  • Ákos Kriston, Tamás Szabó, Ákos Nemes, Soma Vesztegom, Balázs B. Berkes, Norbert Molnár, Dr. Karl Dobos: The application of multi-level simulation during the development of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle
  • Peter L. Simon, Akos Kriston: Bifurcations in a Model of Oxygen Reduction Reaction at Platinum in Acidic Media and Nafion

This year was the fourth time, when the noted Balaton Regatta competition was organized. Dr. Zsolt Palkó, manager of The Explorer Group International Ltd., and dr. Gyula Horváth, CEO of the Balaton Shipping Co. were the main organizers of the event. Albeit it was a sailing competition at the beginning, for three years the offer of the professional regattas was flared with the car regatta. Our team participated also on the 21. August 2010. program. Among the series / mass produced vehicles our HY-GO™ 2.0 hydrogen fuelcell powered car stood as the alternatives of our future. The conformation / build-up and operation of the vehicle were introduced to the enquirers. They had the opportunity as well to make test-drives, for which there were huge demand and interest. The whole event, thanks also to the extra programs, was really an everlasting experience to all.

We would like to invite you to the lecture about the Development of low temperature fuel cells (PEMFC, DMFC) in KIER

Doo Hwan Jung Professor,  University of Science Technology,  Fuel cell research center, Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) Daeduk Science Town, Korea

Date: 03.09.1020 (friday) 10 a.m.

Place: ELTE TTK Chemical Institute  (1117 Budapest, XI. Pázmány Péter sétány 1/A)  room: 062.

Abstract:

Korea Institute of Energy Research has been developed many different types of fuel cell devices using PAFC, PEMFC, DMFC, and SOFC since 1985. Especially, fuel cell car and home application PEMFC a nd mobile application DMFC has been developing from 1994.

In this seminar, I will introduce the R&D status of fuel cell in KIER titled “Development of low temperature fuel cells (PEMFC, DMFC) in KIER". KIER developed using PEMFC i) 10kW, 50kW fuel cell car, ii) 1kW home application system, iii) portable system, and using DMFC i) notebook PCs, PDAs and mobile phones, ii) scooter, iii) military solider application system and fork lift power source were developed. Advanced carbon material for electrodes and gas diffusion materials enhance to increase fuel cell performance will be discussed also for easily understanding of low temperature fuel cell.
